Sports represent the perfect blend of the serene and tumultuous. The most intense of competitions can take place amidst the most beautiful of backgrounds or the most picturesque of arenas.
In a unique way, photography can capture this dichotomy to near-perfection, freezing the juxtaposition for everyone's viewing pleasure.
As part of an ongoing series, Sports on Earth is partnering with Getty Images to bring you the best snapshots from around the sports world each week.
This past week, we saw amazing photographs from all over the globe -- from a thrilling finish in the Rose Bowl to impressive catches in NFL wild-card Games.

USC place kicker Matt Boermeester dabs with teammates after making the game-winning 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to defeat Penn State, 52-49, at the 2017 Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Trojans were arguably the hottest team in college football as the season came to a close and they made a statement in the Rose Bowl, defeating the Nittany Lions with a ferocious offensive attack. Penn State had just missed making the CFP, finishing fifth overall with an 11-2 record, and despite the loss had a successful season on the whole.

Wisconsin linebacker Alec James Badgers celebrates after the Badgers defeated the Western Michigan Broncos, 24-16, in the Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington. The Broncos finished the season 13-0, one of only two teams to end the year undefeated. Still, the upstart squad was only ranked 15th overall due to its strength of schedule and Wisconsin showed why this was the case, as the No. 8 team in the country dealt the Broncos a loss in their toughest matchup of the year.

In another clash of two top-15 schools, Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon dives over Auburn defensive back Joshua Holsey to score a touchdown during the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The Sooners -- ranked No. 7 on the season -- knocked off the No. 14 team in the country by more than two touchdowns after finishing the regular season stong with nine straight wins. They boasted the most efficient offense in the league heading into the matchup.

Robotic jockeys control camels during the Liwa Sports Festival at Moreeb Dune in Abu Dhabi. The festival, which lasts for nine days, attracts a large group of thrill-seeking drivers and bikers to participate in exciting challenges, including drag racing, motocross challenges, camel racing, horse racing, classic car competitions and freestyle drifting. Moreeb Dune, which means 'Terrifying Mountain is over 300m high and with a 50° angle, providing plenty of excitement for spectators and those on the course alike.

Daniel Andre Tande of Norway soars through the air during his qualification jump on Day 1 of the 65th Four Hills Tournament ski jumping event in Innsbruck, Austria. The Four Hills Tournament consists of four ski jumping events that occur chronologically at Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen, and the winner is the jumper who tallies the most points overall. Tande jumped 138 and 142 meters to secure his first win all season during Day 1 of the event.

Kobey Cameron of the Fujitsu Frontiers is thrown in the air by his teammates after they defeated the Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters, 33-24, at the Rice Bowl in Tokyo. The Rice Bowl is an annual football game held in Japan every January 3 that pits the champion of college football and the champion of the corporate X-League, and this year was the 68th iteration.

With a sliver of the court illuminated, Dan Evans of Great Britain serves to Richard Gasquet of France during their men's singles match on Day 4 of the 2017 Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. The higher-ranked Gasquet would win both sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to take home a victory.

New ice swimming world champion Julia Wittig of Germany takes a breath during the women's finals at Woehrsee lake in Burghausen, Germany. Swimmers competed in several different races over multiple days during the 2017 Ice Swimming Aqua Sphere World Championships, and as the snow fell, the surface water temperature dropped to below 0°C, testing the swimmers' mental fortitude.

Leeds, meanwhile, survived a first-half scare to win their match 2-1 and move to the next round, and they await the winner in what would be an uphill battle for either club.

Jockeys and their horses make their way into the fog at Chepstow Racecourse. In 2017, Chepstow will hold a mixture of 32 National Hunt and Flat race meetings. Chepstow's beautiful Piercefield Park was purchased in the 1920s and a group built a racecourse on the 370 acres of land, a course that still stands to this day.

Green Bay wide receiver Randall Cobb hauls in a touchdown pass on a Hail Mary throw by Aaron Rodgers to end the second quarter during an NFC wild-card game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field. The touchdown broke open the game and gave the Packers an eight-point lead going into halftime. The Giants' defense up to that point had stifled the Packers' offensive attack, but the wild touchdown in the half's waning seconds would be a sign of things to come as Green Bay took a commanding lead in the second half of the contest.

Superstar wide receiver Antonio Brown runs down the field for a touchdown after catching a pass from Ben Roethlisberger, as the Steelers dismantled the Miami Dolphins in an AFC wild-card game at Heinz Field. The home team dominated throughout the game and running back Le'Veon Bell joined Brown in deconstructing the Miami defense. A matchup with the vaunted Kansas City Chiefs defense awaits Pittsburgh in the next round.

With the sun illuminating the ice rink in what is one of baseball's most hallowed stadiums, the Boston University Terriers warm up before their game against the Massachusetts Minutemen at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Frozen Fenway has become a tradition up north, and people come from far and wide to witness a unique hockey experience with the backdrop of the Green Monster.
