Sports represent the perfect blend of the serene and tumultuous. The most intense of competitions can take place amidst the most beautiful of backgrounds or the most picturesque of arenas.

In a unique way, photography can capture this dichotomy to near-perfection, freezing the juxtaposition for everyone's viewing pleasure.

As part of an ongoing series, Sports on Earth is partnering with Getty Images to bring you the best snapshots from around the sports world each week.

This past week, we saw amazing photographs from all over the globe -- from a thrilling finish in the Rose Bowl to impressive catches in NFL wild-card Games.
